Garcia Into Top-5 At Glendower

Welcome to the Free Drop Sunshine Ladies Tour wrap where each day throughout the season we re-cap the performances of our former guests.

Here’s all you need to know from day 2 of the Jabra Ladies Classic taking place at Glendower Golf Club.

T-4. Nicole Garcia (E)

Nicole Garcia was once again the standout performer among our former guests.

After opening with a 75 on day one, Garcia went six shots better to leap into a tie for fourth after second round play. Beginning on the par-4 1st, Garcia rebounded from a bogey 5 with a birdie at her second hole of the day. A second red-number at the 6th aided Garcia’s climb up the leaderboard and although she relinquished a shot at the 8th the 30-year-old brushed off the setback to birdie the 9th.

Garcia maintained the great play coming home – notching birdies at the par-5 13th and 15th respectively. Though she bogeyed the 16th she once again managed to put the blemish behind her swiftly – a birdie at the 18th lifting her into a three-way tie for fourth at even-par through 36 holes.

While four shots separate Garcia and Lee-Anne Pace in 3rd, the 30-year-old will certainly be pleased with her improved play.

T-25. Casandra Hall (+8)

21-year-old Casandra Hall was much improved on day 2 – going 9 shots better than her day 1 showing as she carded a one-under par 71.

Hall made a sublime start to her day with four birdies in her first five holes. The only blemish during this stretch came at the par-4 12th. Another birdie at the par-3 17th helped Hall turn in a handy 32.

Unfortunately Hall cooled off somewhat on her back-nine – four bogeys and and a birdie adding up to an inward half of 39.

Despite the finish, Hall will certainly have plenty of positives to take away from her round and will be eager to finish the event on a high in round 3.

MC. Cara Gorlei (+12)

After the fantastic week she had at the Cape Town Ladies Open -Cara Gorlei will no doubt be disappointed to have missed the cut at Glendower. Even more so when one considers that she carded a triple-bogey 8 at the par-5 13th only to eventually miss the cut by 2 shots.

Beginning on the 10th, Gorlei’s start was steady enough with two par-4s. A bogey at the 12th was followed by the triple-drop at the very next hole. Nevertheless she got one shot back with a birdie at the 15th. A fifth dropped shot of the day at the 18th meant Gorlei found herself in a precarious position.

Dropped shots at the 2nd and 4th – either side of another red number – preceded 3 dropped shots over her final four holes.

A birdie at the penultimate hole was little consolation on a tough day for Gorlei who will now turn her attention to the Supersport Ladies Challenge at Gary Player Country Club.

MC. Ivanna Samu (+12)

After the disastrous end Samu suffered to round one, round 2 began brightly for the 22-year-old with five pars and a birdie in her first six holes. Two consecutive bogeys at the 17th and 18th, however, meant the former amateur star turned in one-over par 37.

Samu made a stuttering start to her second-nine with a drop and double-bogey coming at the 2nd and 4th holes respectively. Two further bogeys at the 6th and 9th were offset somewhat by a birdie at the par-5 8th as Samu signed for a 77.

Final Thoughts

While it’s disappointing to see Gorlei and Samu’s tournaments end prematurely, all the very best to Garcia and Hall for the final round. Fingers crossed for a couple of under-par rounds to cap off the week.
